2019 November musings...

I've recently sold out of my CD "Tip the Band."  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7EBNJM4RRdPFabvQg3qyj0?si=dEtvRHYaTCGou5kjx_QMgg

I love selling out of recordings, especially in the day of "nobody buys CDs anymore."   Which isn't quite true. CD sales are declining, still. And probably will continue to decline.  But those are numbers from the majors. They don't really take into account independent musicians.  Mostly because we don't report sales and there really isn't a mechanism to report sales (although technically we could report to Nielson, but who cares...)  But this is a physical format which hasn't been replaced since it came out in the 80s.  That's basically 40 years of a format.  That's impressive.   I don't even think it's declining sales as much as it is a new customer that doesn't want a physical format.  Kids these days (under 35) don't have CD players, I don't even know if new cars have CD players anymore.  I'm gonna guess no.  Although my 2016 Honda came with one... so there's that.  It's not unknown, it's just not what kids are into collecting. All digital, all the time I guess...

Anyway... one of the main reasons I love my airport gig so much is from the CDs that I sell there. I've never really moved a ton of product at any of my shows, ever.   I'm not good at pushing it on the mic at the show.  And I'm not really much of a showman when it comes to my gigs.  But the airport brings in people from all over.  And when you live in a tourist city like San Antonio, it really brings in folks of all stripes.  And a lot of them buy music.   I'm of the mindset that people buy CDs because they want to take home a memory of the experience.  I could be wrong, but I think it's true enough.

Upon my last restocking of my "gig stock," I saw that I'm in danger of selling out another CD.  It's my "Music for Film: Vol I Sax & Bass"  https://open.spotify.com/album/5KePTKGrHfdwEYOaOCVzaX?si=4fPYGRQORDOsS7jm3t3qQA

Less than 50 copies left.  I'm pretty stoked about that.  And it's a very good little record.  A handful of my original tunes and just me and Dave Captein on electric bass.  Even when I listen to it, I forget that it's just the two of us.  It's not a perfect effort, but it's lovely music played with excellent intent and purpose.  And it shows.  I'm glad that people buy it.

I've found that I still shape my solo show around my inventory.  Although a lot of what I do with the show now isn't on a physical product, I do use the "Solo Sax Sessions" CD as a way to market the others.  And I have a stack of boxes in the closet that I would love to sell.  Although when I do sell out of the Solo Sax Sessions, I'm going to retire that show, do a run of the new show and keeping pushing it all the same way.

Whatever...nothing quite like a morning ramble when I'm basically just happy that I'm moving product! Looking forward to the day when I get to post that another one is sold out.
